"Women of Slender Means" Documentary Featuring YWCA Brooklyn Residents
Women of Slender Means is a new documentary by our friend Allison Prete. The film follows five of the over 300 women living at YWCA Brooklyn during a time when New York City's shortage of affordable housing reached a crisis point and we declined offers from developers seeking to convert our historic building in rapidly gentrifying Downtown Brooklyn to luxury housing and instead reinvested our real estate in service of our mission to offer permanent affordable housing for survivors of gender-based violence.
It is touching, witty, triumphant and timely and is also a celebration of women whose lives are seldom recognized. Their stories, told with grace and humor, reveal multidimensional lives of women often ignored by the media: women of color, women living alone, women of slender means. We wish Allison much success with her compassionate, beautiful film and will keep you posted on upcoming screenings.
