Robust Summer Programming for YW LEADers

River clean up

A beautiful way to start winding down from summer in service to the environment: our YW LEADers participated in a shoreline clean-up at Shirley Chisholm State Park in Brooklyn, where they also did a workshop on environmental studies and even spent some time kayaking.

Self defense

Part of our YW LEADers summer programming included a self defense workshop with the Center for Anti-Violence Education (CAE). This type of training empowers young women with tools to apply to a range of interpersonal situations, from physical skills to verbal, emotional and social techniques like assertiveness, de-escalation, situational awareness and self-care practices for healing from violence.

Wellness workshop

YWCA Brooklyn Coordinator of College Access Sarah Barratt led a workshop surrounding the positive effects of movement on the body. The students came up with their own workout routines, practiced some yoga, and participated in a fun dance routine. A little bit of zen to ease us into back-to-school mode.

Summer trip to great adventure

To round out the end of summer, the YW LEADers took a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey.

Now, back to school!
